Project: Metallothionein as Prognostic Biomarker in Skin Cancer

Host Institution: Faculty of Agronomy, Mendel University
Country of Origin: Czech Republic

Previous Workplace: Brazil

TOPIC OF MY RESEARCH:

I am interested in metallothinonein, the cysteine rich metalloprotein that is one of the potential markers for tumour disease development. The spatial imaging of this protein in tumour tissues could help better our understanding of the processes leading to carcinogenesis. Therefore the present project combines a novel approach of nanoparticle biolabelling with mass spectrometry imaging techniques and electrochemical quantification. The proposed multidisciplinary approach will be applied on a model of swine skin melanoma (MeLiM minipigs) that is close to the human model.

USE OF THE PROJECT RESULTS IN PRACTICE:

The finding of the project could considerably enhance our understanding of the processes occurring during the tumour growth and subsequently lead to the discovery of new approaches to tumour growth inhibition. The scope and outputs of the project have the potential to be further developed in commercial area, strengthening the direct collaboration between academia field and industry.
