Project: Visible light-activated photocaged molecules for biological applications

Host Institution: RECETOX MASARYK UNIVERSITY
Country of Origin: Slovakia
Previous Workplace: Netherlands

TOPIC OF MY RESEARCH:

My research concerns with the development of systems capable of releasing biologically relevant molecules in a targeted and noninvasive manner, using light with the ability to penetrate living tissue as a trigger. Such approach allows us to introduce compounds such a signaling molecules and drugs into an organism in their inactive form and activate it at the precise point in space and time.

WHY I HAVE CHOSEN THE TOPIC:

I have chosen this reseach because I believe using light is a very attractive and promising way of achieving control over molecules in a biological setting due to its harmless nature.

USE OF THE PROJECT RESULTS IN PRACTICE:

These systems can be applied in targeted delivery and release of molecules with high spatial and temporal resolution for therapeutic purposes, which may challenge the way medical treatment is perceived today. Besides the potential therapeutic applications, the same principles can be harnessed to study the fundamental biological processes, especially under out of equilibrium conditions.

WHY SOMOPRO

I consider SoMoPro to be an excellent opportunity for young foreign scientists to pursue their research in Czech Republic. Currently, it is one of the best programs in its category, allowing me to transfer the knowledge and expertise I have acquired abroad. At the same time, it is a perfect opportunity for starting an independent scientific career since, for the first time, it allows me to learn how to manage and plan my own research and take responsibility for it.
