Project:  Ultrafast dynamics and control of metamagnetic mesoscale devices

Host Institution: CEITEC VUT Brno
Country of Origin: Spain
Previous Workplace: United States / Czech Republic

TOPIC OF MY RESEARCH:

My research will deal with the ultrafast control of nanoscale magnetic materials that are interesting for technological applications. ‘Ultrafast’ means that we will act on these materials below the scale of picoseconds (one billion times faster than a second), while ‘nanoscale’ means that the size of our prototype devices will be of hundreds of nanometers (10 000 times smaller than one millimeter).

WHY I HAVE CHOSEN THE TOPIC:

Besides having potential applications for the next generation of electronic devices or computer memories, this is a novel and exciting research field awaiting many surprises for us, far away from the equilibrium physics usually explained in the textbooks.

USE OF THE PROJECT RESULTS IN PRACTICE:

In a world in which the amount of digital data stored and processed is tremendously increasing every day, we need alternatives to realize these operations using less energy and if possible, faster. This technology is already strongly based on magnetic devices, but the materials currently available to us present few limitations. Discovering new material platforms and magnetic control mechanisms will greatly allow advancing in these directions.

WHY SOMOPRO:

I came to Brno attracted by the new research lines recently opened at CEITEC BUT. The SoMoPro programme will allow me to take a leap towards exploring my own ideas and manage my own project: a balance between freedom and responsibility. This will give me the opportunity for consolidating myself as an independent researcher and look ahead with a greater scientific maturity. It will also allow us to build a truly unique experimental setup for ultrafast magneto-optics in the South Moravian Region.
