Cardiovascular diseases are the most frequent cause of mortality in developed countries; atherosclerosis is one of them. Researchers are now finding that many people who have heart attacks do not have arteries severely narrowed by plaque. In fact, vulnerable plaque may be buried inside the artery wall and may not always bulge out and block the blood flow through the artery. Development of methodology for the plaque rupture risk estimation (plaque vulnerability) could help in making clinical decisions and selecting the appropriate treatment with the best benefit-to-risk ratio.
