Antibiotic resistance is one of the defining challenges of the 21st century. The CRISPR/Cas9 system has been recognized as an innovative tool for highly specific and efficient genome engineering in organisms. The CRISPR/Cas9 system will be designed to target the major genes involved in antibiotic resistance. When adequate delivery and genome editing will be achieved, the CRISPR/Cas9 system can be applied as a target-specific antimicrobial for treating multidrug-resistant infections in the clinic to prevent drug overuse and control the further spread of antibiotic resistance.
