Development of nanostructured protective coatings and their preparation by magnetron sputtering

The focus of this project is the development of nanostructured protective coatings consisting of a metal, boron and carbon. Calculations show that the proposed materials should exhibit the favourable combination of high hardness and moderate ductility. Coatings will be deposited under differing conditions by magnetron sputtering. A correlation between deposition conditions, plasma parameters and coating properties will be sought and the potential applications of the materials will be evaluated.
